"It can't be done! With over 8 billion web pages on the internet there is no way you will be able to get my website to the top positions of the search engines." I have heard that one a lot. You are right though. Even if you build a great site and submit it to all the top search engines you will not get to the top. But, if you knew how each search engine judges a site you could get to the top. 

When I was in college I worked my brains out writing the best report I could possibly write for a history class. I was sure I would get an "A". I put my whole heart and soul into the project. I was stunned when I got a "C". The problem was the professor didn't tell us what he wanted, we just had to guess. Not until I talked to the professor and found out exactly what he wanted in a report did I get my "A" grade. I continued getting "A's" on every report after that.
