Search Engines vs. Directories
Both are very important but there is a very important difference between search engines and directories. Search engines use software robots or spiders to review web pages and compare them to a check list or algorithm they have and position the web page depending on how well the page matches their algorithm. To make sure the page has current information the spiders revisit the page often and with a new algorithm. If the page is updated to match the new algorithm than it maintains or improves it ranking. Many search engines, like MSN, AOL, etc, pull data from directories in addition to their own databases. Search engines include, but are not limited to: AltaVista (non-paid listings), HotBot, AOL Search, InfoSeek, DirectHit, IWON, Excite, Lycos, Fast/AllTheWeb, MSN (non-paid listings), GoTo (non-paid listings), WebCrawler, Yahoo Web Pages (non-paid listings).
Directories, like Yahoo! Web Sites, use human reviewers to evaluate the entire web site, after which they write a listing including a title and description and that is how your site will be listed in their directory. They don't use spiders or algorithms, so
once you have a listing with them it usually remains unchanged.
