Black
Magic vs. Algorithms
Search engines are like your
customers. They tell you what they want and you do your best to match their request. You are competing with other companies for
a customer's business and the one who matches the customer's requirements the closest gets the customer. The only difference with search engines is they don't "tell" you
what they want. You have to figure it out. Each search engine has their own requirements or
algorithm. The website that best meets their algorithm gets their best recommendation which gives that website the best position.
Just like customers, the search engines can change their requirements or
algorithms. As a matter of fact, that is exactly what they do about every 20 to 30 days. After they change their algorithms they check their database to see which websites have met their new requirements. Those who have, get the top listings. Those who don't, lose their position or get dropped completely from their database. For the Webmaster who is trying to keep his company on the top of the search engines, it is like shooting at a moving target. The black magic is knowing when the search engines have changed their algorithms, what the new ones are, making the changes to the website and resubmitting it to the search engine.
As unfair as this seems it is the best way for them to keep their database up to date with websites that have current information. Otherwise someone who built a website in 1992 and got the number one position for "candle holders" would always be number one and you wouldn't have a chance for a top position.

Give Them What They Want

What are the search engines looking for?
In a word, theme. Every search engine without exception has requirements for:
 |
The number of total words on the page. |
 |
The frequency of the keyword phrase on the page. |
 |
The placement or location of the keyword phrases on the page. |
 |
The number of total words in the body of the page. |
 |
The frequency of the keyword phrase in the body of the page. |
 |
The prominence of the keyword phrase in the body of the page. |
Since they are in control of the requirements in order for you to get to the top of the search engines you need to give them what they want. What do they want? They want a
theme. They want to see that through out the entire web page the theme remains the same. If you start out talking about "pet stores" in the beginning of a page you had better end up talking about "pet stores" at the end of the page. If you change the theme they figure you are doing the old "bait and switch" and they will discount your site. The spiders aren't smart enough to know that "pet stores" and "poodles" have something in common. So talk about "pet stores" on one page and "poodles" on another.
